A filter medium made from powdered feldspar, silica stone, clay, etc., and crushed from pottery baked at about 1,300 ° C to adjust the particle size. The density is about 2.3 to 2.5, but the apparent density is 1.0 to 1.2, which is lighter than the filtered sand, so it is a filter material that can save the amount of backwash water.

During the rapid cooling and solidification of the third volcanic eruption rock, the material that became porous vitreous rock fragments due to the explosive release of the contained gas was used as the filter material. Although the density is as high as 2.4 to 2.6, the apparent density is as small as 0.65 to 0.75, and it is a lightweight filter medium with extremely high porosity and rich porosity.
